Friday Fun! (Holiday Swap)
Hello my lovely readers! This year I get to have Christmas Eve off since Christmas falls on a Saturday. Yay! I am writing this blog post sitting on my couch with a snoring kitty on my lap listening to decidedly not holiday themed music. Hehe. My dad is coming to visit me this weekend for the holiday. He should be arriving in a few hours. I already cleaned all the things! so now I get to just relax, blog, and read.
I was really excited to discover my book blogger holiday swap present on my front porch this morning! What excellent timing! I was also thrilled to see it came all the way from California. It was like receiving a box of warm sunshine. Val of Truth Be Told really went all out. I was surprised to see so many presents to unwrap when I opened the box. :-)
Because I have almost zero patience or capability to delay gratification, I decided to open them right away. :-)
I’m really touched and surprised to see how well Val understands what I like from just my blog and info I put in on the form.
The Scars bookmark really touched me, as it’s a book on self-injuring, and you all know how much I advocate for mental illnesses. The necklace is truly lovely and really has a California feel to it. I was just saying to some of my friends that I really need acquire more necklaces, so that was good timing. The card from a local museum near Val is truly lovely too! It’s definitely going to make it to my fridge. The actual squeeing came when I unwrapped the books, of course though. The Monstrumologist has been on my wishlist *forever*. I’ve never even heard of Vegan on the Cheap (hard to find a veg cookbook I haven’t heard of), and it looks so amazing! All the recipes sound amazing and most of them cost $1 to $2 per serving. Such thoughtful presents!
Thanks a bunch, Val! You made my first holiday swap experience really awesome. :-)
Happy holiday weekend everyone!
Friday Fun! (Creepy Sprouts Guy)
Hello my lovely readers and welcome to the new readers who found me through the Mental Illness Awareness Reading Challenge I’m hosting for 2011!
When you take the same public transit to work every day at the same time, you start to get to know the people on your route. Generally, not through actual names, but you recognize them and their behaviors, and if you’re an Amanda, you start to give them appropriate nick-names. Stargate Chick. (She wears an SG-1 patch on her jacket. No, I am not kidding). Hot Scrubs Guy (Um, nuff said?) Fast-talking Latinas (They always talk to each other really excitedly in Spanish, and I am *dying* to know what they talk about every morning). The most interesting by far though is Creepy Sprouts Guy.
Creepy Sprouts Guy wasn’t always on my route, and I didn’t notice him when he first appeared. One day I got on the bus and spotted an empty aisle seat in one of those two seat sections. I walked toward it and just as I was about to sit, I realized that the guy sitting in the window seat had one of those boxes of sprouts in his lap. But it was open. And he was eating them. By the handful. Without even thinking I went from ass about to sit to ass quickly standing up and walked to the back of the bus and stood holding the bar. I wondered if I was over-reacting. I mean, it’s not that odd to eat sprouts directly from the container on the bus, is it? Wait. I couldn’t even think that with a straight face. I mean, you’re not even supposed to eat on the bus, let alone eat sprouts straight from the container. Maybe he was running late, and it was the only thing in his fridge, I attempted to rationalize. A couple stops later, I noticed an older gentleman coming onto the bus. He headed for the empty seat next to Creepy Sprouts Guy and did the exact same start to sit but then change to standing mid-sit move that I had done a couple of stops earlier. Clearly the creep-factor was not just impacting me. By the time we got to my stop, the bus was almost entirely full and still not a single person was willing to sit next to Creepy Sprouts Guy.
The next day I got on the bus and saw the same guy. And people? He was eating sprouts. Again! Intrigued now, I’ve been quietly sneaking glances at him every day. He’ll put his sprouts in the seat next to him and just grab them by the handful, eating while staring out the window or reading a book. He’s freakishly skinny. Like, I can see his collarbones and wrist bones through his winter clothing skinny. I want to walk up to him, grab the sprouts, and inform him that maybe a bagel would be a better breakfast choice. He’ll deliberately move his sprouts away if he sees someone needing a seat, but no one will sit next to him. I can’t explain just what is so creepy about the sprouts eating. It might be the way he does it. Slowly. Deliberately. As if he’s eating the best cake in the world and the rest of us are clearly stupid for not partaking in it as well.
Then, as if he wasn’t already odd enough, in recent weeks right when our bus gets to a certain bridge, he pulls out one of those old-school combs with the wide-set teeth and combs his hair that’s so blond it’s almost white. This wouldn’t be so odd, but he has a really short haircut, and the hair clearly doesn’t need to be combed. He’ll give a few slow, deliberate motions as we cross the bridge, then as soon as we’re over the bridge, he puts the comb away and goes back to eating his sprouts.
My confusion and fascination over his behavior is reaching the point where I just might have to attempt to strike up a conversation with him. Although I have yet to think up an opener besides, “Morning! Nice day for a bunch of sprouts, eh?”
Friday Fun! (Happy Hanukkah!)
Hello my lovely readers! It’s certainly been a busy week here in Boston. The holidays are officially in full swing, so on top of finishing up my final semester of grad school, I’ve been balancing everything that goes along with the holidays.
I hit up the sales on Saturday after all the crowds were mostly gone and picked up a couple of things I’ve been needing, including a rectangular baking dish, a bread pan, and a coffee maker. The coffee maker was massively on sale, and I know it will save me a lot of money compared to buying coffee every day at Dunks. So far, I’ve only forgotten my traveling mug full of coffee once….. I already put the bread pan to good use by making banana bread. In lieu of regular plain yogurt, I used pineapple Greek yogurt, and you guys, it was to die for. The bread was incredibly moist. I think this may be the secret to nommy banana bread.
I also did about half my holiday shopping (entirely online. I’m a cyber maven). Most of what’s left includes baking massive amounts of baked goods for various people including the mailman, coworkers, etc…. I then decorated my apartment with the few holiday decorations I actually have. It didn’t take too long, particularly since my fake tree is pretty tiny.
Wednesday night was the first night of Hanukkah, which I celebrated with my cat. She seems to have forgotten the menorah between last year and this year. She loves sitting in the window with the menorah to the extent that I have to lock her in another room while the candles are burning. Last night, for the second night of Hanukkah, I went over to my friends’ Nina and E’s apartment. We celebrated with their downstairs neighbors/landlady. We made three different types of latkes and had them with sour cream, homemade apple sauce, and homemade grape juice. Then Nina and E gave me my Chrismukkah presents, and they know me so well! I was totally blown away at the wide assortment of baking accessories, craft projects, cat accessories, and naturally a book that they gave me. :-) I have the bestest friends. Next week, on the last night of Hanukkah, they’ll come to me and get their presents from me. I’m excited for them to see what I got them!
Happy holidays to all. I hope you’re already enjoying and celebrating this lovely month instead of letting the holidays stress you out.
Friday Fun! (Fondue and Seitan)
Hello my lovely readers! This has been a busy week for me, although I suspect not as busy as for those of you who actually traveled for the holiday. Last weekend I hosted my first ever fondue party. You guys, it was awesome. I think this is something from the 70s that we need to make have a come-back. Anyway, I made a beer cheese fondue in my crock pot. It was *so* delicious! We had crostini, broccoli, veggie sausage, pretzels, and more for dipping. Also, one of my guests brought a chocolate fondue, and it was *to die* for.
There were no classes this week because of Thanksgiving, so with the extra time I had I was able to go to a meditation lesson for the first time. I was kind of surprised at how much easier it is to meditate for an extended length of time when you’re in a room with other people meditating instead of doing it by yourself. It was a lot of fun and surprisingly relaxing. I think I’ll try out a few more centers before I decide on one to go to periodically, but I definitely think periodic group meditation is gonna be sticking around my schedule now. Albeit, not weekly. Maybe monthly.
Since I have to work today, I didn’t go anywhere for Thanksgiving yesterday. I spent the day hanging out at home, reading, watching tv, and cooking. I tried making seitan for the first time ever, and you guys. It came out so good! It was surprisingly simple, very filling, and gave me a lot of energy. One batch makes plenty for a week, so I suspect this is now going to be in my rotation of yummy veg foods.
My other big project this week is incorporating some dishes some friends gave me into my kitchen. I realized this is going to mean rearranging my tiny tiny kitchen to try to fit everything in. I think I may wind up using nails to hang various mugs and pots and pans from the walls. I have very little cabinet space.
I hope my American readers are enjoying their holiday weekends, and I hope the rest of you enjoy your regularly-sized ones. Cheers!
Friday Fun! (In Which I Become Part Cyborg)
I have always been accident-prone. It’s a running joke in my family, in fact. I shattered more dinner dishes than I’d care to mention. I was assured that walking into walls would go away with the end of my growth spurts. It did not. In fact, I’m currently sporting a bruise from walking into a wall last week. I also managed to snap my leg in half on a swing-set when I was 11 years old. Odd accidents are nothing new for me. So it should come as no surprise that I managed to knock out one of my two front teeth this weekend.
The short version of the story is that it was Sunday afternoon/evening. I had just mopped my kitchen floor. I walk/jogged from the bedroom area of my apartment to the kitchen area in my bare feet, forgetting momentarily that I had just mopped. And I managed to face-plant on the kitchen tiles. Goodbye front tooth.
Now, when I was growing up the vast majority of the time we didn’t have health insurance. Emergency care, therefore, is ingrained in my head as only for “real” emergencies. Thus, in spite of multiple friends’ pleadings for me to go to the ER that night, I declined and said I would wait for the dentist’s office to open in the morning. After friends helped me get cleaned up and tucked in, I popped some tylenols and went to sleep.
I probably should mention at this point in time that I had an exposed nerve. Yet I was unconvinced this was an emergency. I woke up Monday morning, waited until 8:30, which is when I believe doctor’s offices should open, and called my dentist. The phone informed me he wasn’t opening until 10am. Ok. At this point I was in pretty bad pain, so I called the emergency number and left an incredibly apologetic voicemail explaining that I wasn’t certain if it was an emergency, but could he please call me back so we could discuss it.
My super-sweet dentist, who speaks with a lilting Arabic accent, called me back about 20 minutes later. I lispingly told him one of my front teeth was gone, but the root was still intact so maybe it wasn’t an emergency. I then started to half-laugh, half-cry at how much like a hillbilly I looked. My dentist calmed me down and promised me he could fix my smile, this definitely was an emergency, and please come as soon as possible.
My wonderful friend Nina drove me to the dentist’s where I was greeted with shocked looks from everyone in the office. To sum up all their comments, “Sweetheart, this is so bad! You must be in so much pain!” To which I responded, “Well, I’m a tough broad.” The first thing they did was to numb my mouth, part of which included putting novocaine directly into the exposed nerve. That is the only point at which during any of these procedures I cried. They then drilled around, did things to the infection, and put a temporary tooth on. They explained to me that the infection needed to go away before they could do the next step, so I walked out with prescriptions for codeine and antibiotics. Let me tell you, that codeine has come in handy.
The next step was on Wednesday, and for the entire procedure I felt like I was suddenly in a scifi movie. They popped off the temporary tooth and drilled around some more. Then they informed me that today they were putting in the post and the cap, taking the molds for the new tooth, and then putting on another temporary tooth. Post? I thought. What the heck is a post? The next thing I know, the dentist is shoving a metal rod into my jaw. He pauses for a moment, and the rod is literally extending from my upper jaw all the way down to my lower lip. My immediate thought? Haha, Ah’m a vahmpiiiire! Then they pulled it back out, put another one in, and it was suddenly miraculously tooth-length. Then suddenly I hear the dentist asking the hygeniest for the torch. Say what now?! Yup, she had a torch that glowed blue flame, and he placed the tip of one of his tools into it and proceeded to burn part of my gum/teeth. I was truly horrified/terrified and wide awake. Also the smell of your own skin burning off at high temperatures is one I doubt I will ever forget. At around this point in time they took the mold for my new tooth. The gunk in the mold reminded me remarkably of what I’ve always imagined biting into flesh would taste like. Haha, now I’m a zombie. Braiiiins I thought. Then the dentist got this thing that looked like a glue gun, but actually shot out tooth-colored putty. He applied this to my tooth area, and then the hygeniest used a laser–ya, a motherfucking LASER–to solidify it into my new temporary tooth. Then the dentist checked the color of my teeth against a chart for the color of my new tooth. He sweetly informed me that it’s going to be very awesome and ready in 2.5 to 3 weeks.
All I could think while I was walking out of the office was that my mouth now has a metal rod in it, and lasers were used on me, and when my new tooth comes in, I’m totally gonna be part cyborg.
Friday Fun! (Open Studios, Boston Symphony Orchestra)
Hello my lovely readers! I finally got an entire weeks’ worth of review posts up! Yay for being back in the swing of things.
This has been a really busy week, but that is quickly becoming the norm for me. Last Saturday I went to some artists’ open studios with Nina, her dad, and our friend E. The studios were totally gorgeous. Some of them were also the artists’ homes, and they were essentially loft style apartments. I was insanely jealous. At one of the studios I picked up a little piece of $10 found art. I think it’s quite feminist as it features some empty birth control packs, etc…, and I plan on hanging it in my bedroom area. Once I figure out how. Nina’s dad took us all out for Thai food, and it was amazingly good! Our waiter was this fabulous gay Asian guy, and he is now officially one of my favorite waiters ever. That night I hung out with E. We had a few drinks and watched a double-feature of The Last House on the Left–the original and the remake. Be expecting a review comparing the two next week!
Also this week I went to the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Nina. It was my first time ever at a symphony, and I really enjoyed it. I discovered that classical music relaxes me. I might have to acquire a cd of some to fall asleep to. The conductor did two of the movements playing the piano and conducting simultaneously. It was pretty amazing. Plus, it’s always fun to have a night to get all dressed up for an actual reason.
Things are crazy busy right now with the final projects coming up in grad school, and my general refusal to slow down my socializing and taking in of the events in Boston. It’ll be a busy weekend for me! I hope you all are enjoying your falls. :-)
Friday Fun! (Busy Week, Happy Halloween)
Oh boy what a busy week it’s been! It was great to get to see Team Unicorn last Saturday night, even though not all of us could be there. The pizza was yummy, and Kristi’s apple cake was absolutely scrumptious! We played Apples to Apples, and it was great to see how well (or not well) we all knew each other. On Sunday E and I took our friend Nina out for her birthday to an excellent Thai restaurant. All of the food was simply amazing. My appetizer was this goat cheese, walnut, and grape pate. It was to die for. Then for my main course I had lemongrass tofu with jasmine rice. And our drinks! They were so fabulous. My first one was a gin drink and came with this cucumber garnish. Then after that we all had blackberry sours. I think I may have found my new favorite girly drink, haha.
The beginning of my week was full of grad school. I finally went to a full session of class healthy enough to participate. That was good! Then I had a big paper to write, which was what most of my time was spent on. Last night, I went out for live music and karaoke with my friends. Nina and I sang Poker Face, and it was awesome. I have 1 paper, 2 projects, 2 handouts to design for my students, 1 cataloging assignment, and TAing online until the second week of December between me and graduation. I can’t wait! But I’ll definitely be busy in the meantime.
I hope you all have super happy Halloweens, no matter how you decide to celebrate. :-)
Friday Fun! (Those Reviews? I Swear They’re Coming)
Hey guys! So the Evil Whore Month From Hell (or EWMFH as it’s now known on twitter) continued on this week despite my best intentions and attempts. Sunday night, my friends Nina and E came over, and while we were hanging out I said to them, “ugh, my throat is kinda sore. I hope I’m not getting sick.” To which I was told to eat copious amounts of garlic. I did. It didn’t work. Tuesday night I ended up leaving class early so I could get to bed early. I thought that would ward off the sickness. It didn’t. I ended up staying home sick and sleeping for literally almost 24 hours straight on Wednesday. Sigh. I’m still kind of sick, but I’m on the getting better end. On the plus side, my online professor gave me a week extension on a paper I had due last week, so that’s good.
Allow me to geek out for a moment. Last Sunday I went to the optometrist’s to get new glasses to replace the ones that are currently being held together with superglue. Unbeknownst to me, they were having a huge sale. You guys, this meant that for the first time in my life, I got to get super high-quality glasses. I’m in heaven. I can’t wait to get them! I got two pairs, actually. It’s good to have a back-up pair just in case, oh, I don’t know, you fall down the cement stairs in front of your apartment and instead of having someone there to help you find them and superglue them back together you’re alone and trying to fix them while mostly blind. Hey, it could happen. So anyway, I got these sexy black/squarish frames with silver things on the side that look kind of like the claddagh. Then I also got squarish wine colored frames with rhinestone flowers on the side. (Just one on each side). I’m going to be fashionable for once! Yes.
I’m looking forward to my weekend. I’ll be trying on the loads of new clothes I bought online tonight and having a girly fashion show of them with my friend E. Tomorrow, I’ll be seeing my librarian buddies (Team Unicorn) for a pizza/gaming party, and Sunday I’ll be going out for dinner for Nina’s birthday. Busy, busy, busy. But I promise to get some reviews written and scheduled for next week! Ye olde Wolfy is returning. Swear.
Friday Fun! (Welcome, Thanks, and Ramblings)
Hello my lovely readers! I want to pay a special welcome and hello to my new subscribers acquired over the course of BBAW. I know personally the overwhelming number of new blogs I was exposed to myself, so I’m honored you found me interesting and unique enough to stick around. I want to let you know that this has been an off couple of weeks for me on the blog as things are a bit rough personally right now. Normally my posts are a bit better written (at least I think so), and a bit more frequent, so, sorry about that. Thanks for hanging in there! I also want to say thanks to my friends who’ve been there for me the last couple of weeks in various ways. If you guys happen to be reading this, I want you to know that you rock.
Fall weather has finally come to Boston, and I am so grateful. With fall you get cool weather but no nasty storms to deal with. It’s the best of both situations. I have yet to go apple picking, but I did have cider for the first time of the season last night. (Ok, ok, hard cider, but it still counts). Grad school continues to be evil and suck the life from me. I can’t wait until I can be just a librarian instead of a librarian and a grad student. Tomorrow I’ll be volunteering at a local food event with my friends Nina and E. Hopefully, it’ll be nice weather.
Next week should see an uptake in the number of reviews. I’m currently about half-way through The Dark Tower, and it’s such a chunkster, I plan on reading a short, quick read after it. I also plan on having some me time on Sunday, which besides exercising and cleaning my apartment will most likely include curling up on the couch with my kitty and watching a movie. I know. I am so exciting. In any case. Reviews. You will have them next week.
Happy weekends everybody!
Friday Fun! (Announcements Galore)
Hello my lovely readers! I actually have a few exciting blog announcements for you today!
First, I set up an aStore. An aStore is your own personal section on Amazon full of items you recommend. I have five categories: books, movies, tv shows, videogaming, and household. Every single item in my store is something I’ve personally read/watched/played/whatever and would give at least 4 out of 5 stars to. Since it’s just recommendations, you’re still buying the items from Amazon or a third-party seller, not me, but I do get a small percentage of the profit as a thanks from Amazon for referring you to them. There is a link to the store on the right sidebar of my blog, so if you want a centralized list of trust-worthy reading/viewing/playing recommendations with easy 1 or 2 click buying, please check it out! It’s good for me and good for you. It’s a win/win.
Next, I realized how embarrassingly odd and disorganized my categories were. I was still pretty much using the same ones I set up the first couple of weeks I was blogging before I really realized what I’d be posting on a regular basis. I didn’t even have genre categories for my plethora of book reviews. How annoying for you guys! I mean, say you like the dystopian reviews, but there was not category for that. Blergh. So, I totally revamped the categories. Not only did I add genres, but I also made these Friday Fun posts and Imminent Arrivals and TBR posts their own categories. It’s exciting and organized and it made me happy! Be sure to check it out, and please let me know if there are any categories that you think don’t make much sense. What makes sense to me might not make sense to people that aren’t me, after all.
Hokay, finally I wanted to give you guys a heads-up that next week is going to be a bit different as I’m participating in Book Blogger Appreciation Week (BBAW). Basically, it’s a week every September since 2008 that exists “to recognize the hard work and contribution of book bloggers to the promotion and preservation of a literate culture actively engaged in discussing books, authors, and a lifestyle of reading.” It consists of themed posts, visiting blogs new to you, and awards! It’s an awesome idea, and major props to Amy of My Friend Amy for coming up with it. I just missed it last year, and I’m excited to participate this year. So next week in addition to my regular schedule of reviews there will also be the BBAW daily posts. Each day will have a different theme like the first book blog you read, so it should still be interesting for my readers who aren’t book bloggers.
That’s it for announcements! I hope you enjoy the store, the categories, and the BBAW posts next week. :-)
