Friday Fun! (Better World Books)

Hello my lovely readers!  I hope your weeks have all been awesome.  My week was fairly busy as per usual.  I baked cookies, made pizza, had a movie marathon with a friend, and was finally forced to put my ac in thanks to the recent surge in temperature in Boston.  My cat is shedding up a storm.  She’s been loving up the extended brushing sessions she’s now getting.  She’s also been showing an intense love for water and getting wet (by repeatedly trying to climb in the shower with me).  She’s an odd duck, and I’m considering giving her a bath to help with the heat/shedding issue.  I’ll let you know if I wind up torn to shreds.

I’m finally finishing up my spring cleaning I started during vacation.  After bringing my weeded books to a local indie then posting to PaperBackSwap, I still had a few left-over.  I was pleased to discover an awesome charity that pays for the shipping so you can donate books at no cost to you–Better World Books.  Basically it’s an online bookstore that uses all their proceeds to benefit worldwide literacy and libraries.  It helps them immensely when their stock is donated.  I know most of my followers are big readers, so I highly encourage you to check them out if you’re weeding or adding to your shelves.  Both activities help out with literacy, and that just makes for a better world all-around.  (Hence the name of the bookstore, I imagine).

My weekend is going to consist of going to see Bridesmaids with a friend, some necessary clothes shopping, and a Team Unicorn gathering.  Happy weekends all!

Friday Fun! (Staycation Report)

Hello my lovely readers!  I hope you didn’t miss me *too* terribly much while I was on vacation.  😉  I must say, a vacation was exactly what I needed.  I had a lot of time to think without the stress of work or job hunting or school or any of that hanging over my head, and I feel like my head is screwed on much more straight now, I must admit.  I’m re-focused and have new energy.

So what all did I get up to?  Well, I went out for Asian fusion with one of my friends.  The mix of sushi, seaweed salad, and kushiyaki was awesome, but of course the highlight of the meal was the White Crane sake.  Nom.  That is all I have to say about that.  I also hit up a local pub that has a huge, huuuuge beer selection.  My friend calls it “the cheesecake factory of beer.”  Damn straight.  It just so happened that the final game of Bruins vs. Montreal was on, so we got to take that in with the crowd as well.  It was quite the memorable night.

I also met up with a member of Team Unicorn for lunch.  I so rarely get to see any of them outside of our periodic gatherings.  I also spent an afternoon reading by the Charles (and getting sunburned), as well as taking in the sights at the MFA.  I wanted to see the Chihuly exhibit, but I never did find it.  In fact, I had trouble getting out of the Asian and Ancient Europe section.  Ah well.

A friend and I hung out and made this incredible recipe of doom.  It was amazing. And there was strawberry jam all over my floor the next morning.

As you can see from my post earlier this week, I also took in the Boston Ballet for the first time since I was very young.  I had a fun time, but I must say it was not what I was expecting.  I also finally tried Zaftig’s restaurant for the first time after hearing it highly praised among Team Unicorn for a very long time.  I had an in-house made black bean burger, and I admit, it was the best one I’ve had in the Boston area.

I spent a day riding my bike around the city, partaking in a session with my trainer, and lounging around Harvard Square and on the river.  After that, I got the urge to spring clean.  I sorted, organized, recycled, and bagged up four trash bags of items to donate this week.  I also started scrubbing down the walls, but still have a few left to do.  My whole apartment feels so much lighter, fresher, and more homey now.  I’m so glad I took the time to spring clean.

That was pretty much my staycation, and I think I did a fairly good job keeping it well-rounded.  I’ve returned refreshed, and I must say that I fully intend to not let so much time go on before I take another one again.  Happy weekends!

Friday Fun! (MIT Mystery Hunt)

January 28, 2011 3 comments

Hello my lovely readers!  Sorry I missed Friday Fun last week.  Since nothing that exciting happened last weekend or this week, I thought I’d tell you about the MIT Mystery Hunt I participated in the weekend before.  That was the original plan for last week’s Friday Fun anyway. 😉

Team Unicorn friends Jeremy and Amy invited me to participate in their team in this year’s MIT Mystery Hunt.  Basically, every January a bunch of groups of nerdy people get together and solve a series of mystery puzzles in a competition to win the coin and the hunt.    That winning team then wins the privilege of designing the next year’s puzzle.  It lasts from Friday mid-day to sometime on Sunday.  I was pretty nervous going in, because I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into.  Also I’d heard the people who participate are brilliant, and while I consider myself to be intelligent, I never claimed to be a genius.  😉  Plus, the teams are fairly large (I think there are 30ish members?  Correct me if I’m wrong, Amy and Jeremy), and I only knew two team members going in….so yeah.  I was nervous.  But I was also excited!

I arrived after work on Friday and walked into a room full of tables of groups of people crowded around their laptops, as well as a few people at chalkboards and a table of food in the corner.  I delayered from coming in from outside, tossed my bag of chips onto the communal pile, and kind of hesitated for a second.  A gal I didn’t know immediately started talking to me and invited me to join the puzzle she and a couple of other gals were working on.  It turned out that the puzzle had to do with musicals, and well, none of them knew much about musicals.  You guys.  Musicals have been my forte since I was 5 years old.  So I jumped right in and started learning how the puzzling goes about.

A burrito run, some chit-chat, and some solving later, and I found myself totally engrossed in the world of puzzling.  Not only were the puzzles really challenging, but the way they’re designed you need a group of people to work on them.  A combination of everyone’s strengths.  It naturally leads to group work in a way I never experienced in the classroom.  Plus, everyone I met on the team was super-nice, friendly, and welcoming.  They were funny and fun to hang out with.  Shortly I found myself talking off-topic with one of the gals and found out we live in the same general area of Boston.  We hit it right off discussing zombies and True Blood, and I felt right at home.  I wound up showing up for each day of the puzzling, even though at first I wasn’t sure if I’d like it enough to.  I also may have ordered a team tshirt and promised to come next year as well. 😉

It was a real blast, and I encourage any nerds to participate.  You can participate from a distance via internet connection if you want, so you don’t have to be local to play.  Thanks a bunch, Amy and Jeremy, for encouraging me to come play!  It was one of my best weekends I’ve had in Boston.

Friday Fun! (Those Reviews? I Swear They’re Coming)

October 22, 2010 2 comments

Hey guys!  So the Evil Whore Month From Hell (or EWMFH as it’s now known on twitter) continued on this week despite my best intentions and attempts.  Sunday night, my friends Nina and E came over, and while we were hanging out I said to them, “ugh, my throat is kinda sore. I hope I’m not getting sick.”  To which I was told to eat copious amounts of garlic.  I did.  It didn’t work.  Tuesday night I ended up leaving class early so I could get to bed early.  I thought that would ward off the sickness.  It didn’t.  I ended up staying home sick and sleeping for literally almost 24 hours straight on Wednesday.  Sigh.  I’m still kind of sick, but I’m on the getting better end.  On the plus side, my online professor gave me a week extension on a paper I had due last week, so that’s good.

Allow me to geek out for a moment.  Last Sunday I went to the optometrist’s to get new glasses to replace the ones that are currently being held together with superglue.  Unbeknownst to me, they were having a huge sale.  You guys, this meant that for the first time in my life, I got to get super high-quality glasses.  I’m in heaven.  I can’t wait to get them!  I got two pairs, actually.  It’s good to have a back-up pair just in case, oh, I don’t know, you fall down the cement stairs in front of your apartment and instead of having someone there to help you find them and superglue them back together you’re alone and trying to fix them while mostly blind.  Hey, it could happen.  So anyway, I got these sexy black/squarish frames with silver things on the side that look kind of like the claddagh.  Then I also got squarish wine colored frames with rhinestone flowers on the side.  (Just one on each side).  I’m going to be fashionable for once! Yes.

I’m looking forward to my weekend.  I’ll be trying on the loads of new clothes I bought online tonight and having a girly fashion show of them with my friend E. Tomorrow, I’ll be seeing my librarian buddies (Team Unicorn) for a pizza/gaming party, and Sunday I’ll be going out for dinner for Nina’s birthday.  Busy, busy, busy.  But I promise to get some reviews written and scheduled for next week!  Ye olde Wolfy is returning.  Swear.
