Publication Announcement: Novella – Waiting For Daybreak – Second Edition

July 21, 2022 3 comments
Image of a digital book cover. The silhouette of a woman and a cat sit in front of a sunrise. Red blood splatters across the title.

I am thrilled to announce the publication of the second edition of my novella Waiting For Daybreak. I published the first edition 10 years ago in 2012. I have completed major updates throughout the second edition, as well as added an author’s note and a content note. You can view both of the notes in their entirety by using the preview book feature on its Amazon page.

Here is the updated blurb:

I just want to live like normal people. But my Borderline Personality Disorder fills each day with emotional pain. And drives other people away. Not that there’s anyone to drive away anymore…

Frieda’s a struggling twenty-something young professional when the apocalypse comes. Overnight, Boston falls apart as a rapidly spreading virus makes her neighbors crave brains. Enough to kill for them.

She survives alone for a whole year in her urban studio apartment. And she surprises herself by managing her mental illness better than she did before. When her beloved cat becomes ill, Frieda goes on a quest to save her. It sets off a chain of events that challenges everything.

Reviews of the first edition call this a “dynamic” read that’s a “great story with a twist I didn’t foresee.” This places a character you’d expect in a women’s fiction novel at the heart of a zombie apocalypse.

Today and tomorrow (July 21st-22nd, 2022, Pacific Time), the ebook is free for everyone. Please consider downloading your copy today!

If you previously purchased the first edition, note that Amazon does not automatically send the second edition to your kindle. Please take advantage of these two free days to get the updated version. If you missed the free days, you can sign up for my newsletter to get notified of future ones. I hold them periodically.

Publication Announcement: Nonfiction “These Boots Were Made for Who?”

A purple background with an arch of the words "Vol. 3 is here!" There's a green background arch with three humanoid animals eating vegetables (mostly carrots) together. They are a wolf, a horse, and a cat. justfemmeanddandy.com is across the bottom in yellow and black.

I am thrilled to announce the publication of my first nonfiction piece in Just Femme & Dandy – a biannual literary arts magazine on fashion for and by queer trans, two-spirit, non-binary, and intersex people.

This magazine is free to read in two different formats.

Here’s a blurb about my piece.

“These Boots Were Made for Who?” explores how my favorite pair of thrifted boots helped me develop my queer, bisexual fashion sense and sustained me throughout the pandemic.

Publication Announcement: Short Story “Bostonians Aren’t Friends With Our Neighbors”

Image of a digital book cover. A little girl holds a hand out touching the nose of a dragon with glowing blue eyes. Lava or fire appears to be around them.

I am thrilled to announce that I have a short story in Wyrms: An Anthology of Dragon Drabbles (stories of exactly 100 words) from Shacklebound Books, edited by Eric Fomley.

For $3 digital, $6 print, you get eighty-two stories of dragons, hydras, wyverns, sea serpents, and all other forms wyrms take by authors all over the world! Step into dozens of different fantasy worlds but be careful where you tread, there be dragons here.

Here’s the first line from my drabble. I hope it entices you.

Publication Announcement: Short Story “The University of Late-Night Moans”

Digital cover of an anthology. A Black person in a gold dress with an ethereal crown stands in front of a pink and purple background.
Cover art by Craig Hale.

I am thrilled to announce that I have a short story coming up in issue 3 of Decoded Pride: A science fiction, fantasy, and horror story-a-day anthology for Pride month!

This is a really cool project. The editors worked hard to select and curate a collection of flash fiction, short stories, longer fiction, and comics by queer and trans authors with queer and trans themes to celebrate Pride month. Have you been frustrated with how corporate Pride has become? Are you a more introverted queer person? Then this is the ideal way to celebrate Pride this year!

The way it works is you pay the $14.99 subscription fee, and then you have access to the website where all the creative works drop each day. In the late summer or early fall, you’ll be sent a color PDF of all the stories plus interviews with all 30 authors (yes, including me!) You can subscribe at any point throughout the month and get retroactive access to the previous stories. After the month is over, you can still purchase the PDF. As a thank you for being one of my supporters, now through June 30th you can get $2 off your purchase with the discount code FrienzNFam at check-out.

My short story will published on Thursday, June 9th. It’s a sapphic fantasy romance. That means expect something supernatural. Expect women loving women. And I promise you a happy ever after. Also, expect some 90s nostalgia.

Here’s the blurb:

It’s 1998, and Leonora’s friend Virginia is helping her investigate the moans coming from the cemetery across the train tracks from her dorm.

New Release Friday: New Feature and New Opportunity for Indie Books!

February 12, 2016 Leave a comment

New Release FridayHello my lovely readers!

I’ve been thinking long and hard about how to bring you more posts per week, particularly ones that are related to books but not necessarily book reviews. One of my passions is bringing attention and buzz to books that might not necessarily get them otherwise. In thinking about this, I thought about how many good-sounding books are offered to me for review that I have to pass up simply because I don’t have time to read them all.  Then I had an a-ha moment. I don’t have to have read a book to stir up buzz about it. Especially if it’s a book I think sounds intriguing and could interest my readers but that I simply don’t have time to read myself.  To this end, I’m introducing New Release Friday.

What does this mean for blog readers?
For my readers, this means that on Fridays only my blog will feature a new book release that is either free or has a coupon code exclusively for readers of my blog. Only books that fit the genres that are routinely seen on this blog will be featured, so if you enjoy reading my reviews, you should at least be interested in some of the new releases featured.  If you are a reader of this blog and not an indie author or publisher, feel free to stop reading here and just look forward to the free books and coupon codes and new releases coming your way in the upcoming year! If you are an indie author or publisher, please read on for more details.

What does this mean for indie authors and publishers?
If you are an indie author or publisher, this is a chance to generate buzz and interest for your book from a readership interested specifically in your genre or content. The buzz on your posting day will also cross-post to my twitter, as well as to a dedicated Pinterest board (similar to my books reviewed Pinterest boards) of new releases featured here.

The New Release Friday posts will feature:

  • Book cover –> I am happy to be the official cover reveal, if you wish.
  • Book blurb
  • Genre and content note
    • If the book contains GLBTQ content or would be a good read for the Mental Illness Advocacy Reading Challenge, this will be noted, as these are two content areas that are of particular interest to my readership.
    • Trigger warning note for books containing rape or attempted rape.
  • One paragraph from the author on what makes this book unique/stand-out/a different read than you will generally find within that genre.
  • One paragraph from the author on a topic of their choice (their writing process, why an issue in the book is important to them, etc…) (This paragraph is optional).
  • Coupon code or note that the book is free.
    • Coupon codes can range from 25% to 100% off for readers of this blog and may be for a duration of 24 hours to 7 days.
  • Link to buy the book.

Because I am doing you a service and, unlike when I review ARCs, I am not getting a book in exchange for this service, I will be charging a fee for these posts. Currently the fee will be $20, payable via PayPal, but this fee will change over time dependent upon the readership of the blog.  However, if you fill out the form within the next week (by the end of the day February 19th), you can get featured for free!! Just enter the coupon code below into the coupon code section of the form:

1WKFR

Additionally, because I wish to tailor the content of my blog, only books within the following genres will be featured:

  • Chick Lit
  • Detective / Film Noir
  • Fantasy (including urban)
  • Historical Fiction
  • Horror
  • Mystery
  • Nonfiction – Cookbooks
  • Nonfiction – GLBTQ
  • Nonfiction – Health and Fitness
  • Nonfiction – History
  • Paranormal Romance
  • Scifi
  • Western Romance

Authors and publishers interested in being featured on New Release Friday should fill out the form found here a minimum of 3 weeks prior to the Friday you wish to be featured.

Within 1 week of submission, I will get back to you and let you know if I think your book is a good match for my readership.  If it is, you will need to provide me with, in addition to what was on the form:

  1. A buy link for the post
  2. A coupon code for Opinions of a Wolf readers (not necessary if your book is free)
  3. A jpg of your book cover
  4. One paragraph from the author on what makes this book unique/stand-out/a different read than you will generally find within that genre.
  5. Optional: one paragraph from the author on a topic of their choice (their writing process, why an issue in the book is important to them, etc…)
  6. $20 via PayPal

All of the above will be due one week before the post schedule date aka the Friday before you wish the post to be published.  If you do not provide me with these 6 items one week before the post is to be published, you forfeit your right to be featured on the blog.

This same information is also featured on my Disclaimers and Sponsored Posts page.

Thank you everyone, and I hope you all, authors, publishers, and readers will enjoy this new feature!

Announcement: New Line in Shop: Miffy / Nijntje!

A cross stitch of a bunny holding a basket of carrotsHello my lovely readers!

I am incredibly excited to announce the new line in my shop: Miffy / Nijntje!

Miffy is a beloved character from a series of children’s books by Dick Bruna.  Her name is Nijntje in Dutch.  I discovered Miffy on Netflix one night, and immediately fell in love.  She’s such an adorable little bunny, and her stories are wonderful!  Their availability in dual-language apps are also helping me on my side-quest to learn Dutch.  When I discovered a shocking lack of Miffy cross stitch patterns, I made my own so we could hang a version of her in our living room.  I decided to make BOTH the patterns and the completed products available for all Miffy fans to enjoy.  The picture on this post is just of my personal favorite design, Miffy’s Garden / De Tuin Van Nijntje.  Please click through to my shop to see all five designs!

PS I am now shipping completed items to The Netherlands and the UK in addition to the US! Patterns are available worldwide.

ETA 3/5/15: I have now closed my Etsy shop, but I’ve made my patterns available on my Cross-Stitch page.

Announcement: My Cross-Stitches and Patterns are Now Available to Purchase on Etsy!!

February 12, 2014 2 comments

Bi pride emoticon heartHello my lovely readers!

I am beyond excited to announce that my cross-stitching and patterns are now available on my new Etsy shop: Stitch-A-Stitch!!

For right now, the items available for sale are completed items, hooped into 3 inch hoops.  They are either regular emoticons in black or bi pride emoticons in the bi pride colors.  There is also one bi pride item that is simply the word “BI” in the bi pride colors. The pattern available for sale is one I designed to gift to a friend for Christmas.  It is of the Sriracha rooster bottle.  I couldn’t find one anywhere, so I designed one myself, and I thought it made sense to make it available for look of epic concern emoticon faceothers!  As time goes on, I plan to broaden the items I have available.  The next category I am working on at the moment is the Avengers as pixel people.

The positive feedback I received here on this blog from you all encouraged me to pursue opening this shop.  Thank you all so much for your support, and I do hope you will take a moment to check it out.
